Your invoice is made in your browser. Nothing you type, including bank details, is sent to us.
01 · How to use it
Make an invoice in five steps
- Add your details. Your business name and address, plus your company number and logo if you have them. Tick “I’m VAT registered” to add VAT.
- Add your client. The name and address of the person or business you are billing.
- Set the invoice details. An invoice number, the date and your payment terms. The due date is worked out for you.
- Add what you are charging for. Add as many items as you need, with a quantity and price for each.
- Download the PDF. Add your bank details, then download. Click “Start a new invoice” for the next one, and the invoice number moves on by one.
02 · What an invoice must show
What to include on a UK invoice
HMRC expects every invoice to show the following. The generator includes fields for all of them.
- A unique invoice number, in sequence
- Your business name and address
- Your client’s name and address
- The date of the invoice
- A clear description of what you are charging for
- The amount for each item and the total due
If you are VAT registered, a VAT invoice must also show your VAT registration number, the VAT rate and the amount excluding VAT for each item, and the VAT total. If the date you supplied the goods or services is different from the invoice date, add it to the item description. Limited companies must also show their registered company name and number. See GOV.UK: invoices, what they must include.
03 · Questions
Frequently asked questions
Is this invoice generator really free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many invoices you make. You can turn off the small “made with” line in the footer if you prefer.
Do you store my invoices or bank details?
No. The invoice is made in your browser and saved to your device as a PDF. Nothing you type is sent to us. If you tick “Remember my business and bank details”, they are saved in your own browser only, and client details are never saved. Keep your own copy of every invoice you send.
Do I need to charge VAT?
Only if you are VAT registered. In the UK you must register once your VAT-taxable turnover goes over £90,000 in a rolling 12 months, and you can choose to register below that. If you are not registered, leave the VAT box unticked and do not add VAT to your invoices.
How should I number my invoices?
Use a unique number for every invoice, in sequence, such as INV-001, INV-002 and so on. When you click “Start a new invoice”, the number moves on by one. If you tick “Remember my business and bank details”, the next number is saved for your next visit too. Do not reuse or skip numbers without a record of why.
What payment terms should I use?
Thirty days is common for business customers, and 7 or 14 days is common for freelancers. If a business customer pays late, you may be able to claim interest and compensation under the Late Payment of Commercial Debts (Interest) Act 1998.
Can I make invoices in euros or dollars?
Yes. Choose the currency in Step 3. VAT rates in the tool are UK rates, so check the rules if you are invoicing a client outside the UK.
